Q. What equipment do you use to play in concert and in the recording studio?
ステージやレコーディングの時に使用している器材は何ですか?
A. The setup I have at home is all Drum Workshop drums and pedals with Zildjian cymbals. My snare drum was custom made for my dad (the late Mel Taylor) to his specs by a Japanese company called Canopus. It's a six ply maple 20 by 6 1/2 inch snare. I use Promark 5B wood tip drumsticks; that was what my dad used. I have 4 rack toms -- 8,10,12 and 13 inches and 2 floor toms -- 14 and 16 inches -- and a 20 inch bass drum. That's pretty much what I use on the road also except I use a 22 inch bass drum for a little more deeper tone. I use a heavy duty Pearl rack and hardware for my toms and cymbals. The snare stand is DW.
ドラムとペダルはDrum Workshop製でシンバルはZildjian製です。スネアは6 1/2インチ、maple20 6枚貼りの日本のCanopus製Mel Taylorカスタムモデル。スティックはMelも使っていた木製Promark 5B。タムタムはラックタイプが8、10、12、13インチの4つ、フロアタイプが14、16インチの2つ。バスドラは20インチです。ツアーでより低音を重視する時に22インチのバスドラを使う以外は家のものと同じセットを使います。その他タムタムなどのラックやシンバルスタンドはPearl、スネアスタンドはDWのものを使っています。

Q.You use a different grip on the drumsticks than your father, don't you?
Leonさんのスティックの持ち方はMelさんとはちがいますね
A. Yes, I use a match grip as opposed to the traditional grip that my father used. I feel that it gives me more power. I learned that way and I feel more comfortable with it.
Melの伝統的な持ち方とは違う自分に合った持ち方をしています。この持ち方の方が私にとってはパワーが出るし気持ちよくプレイできるのです。
Q.Since playing drums requires considerable physical stamina, do you have any special exercise regimen that you follow?
ドラマーには肉体的に大変なスタミナが必要ですが、何か特別に鍛えていますか
A. Playing pretty much does it for me. I try to work out twice a week or so, nothing heavy, just some treadmill or stairmaster or free weights. On the road, though its pretty hard to find the time to work out.
私はドラムをたたくことで鍛えています。また週に2回位treadmill、stairmasterやfree weightsで鍛えていますから辛くはありません。
Q. What was your impression of Japan when you went on tour for the first time last year? Was it a cultural shock?
リーオンさんが(昨年)初めて日本に来たときの、日本の印象は?カルチャーショックはありませんでしたか?
A.Yeah, it was.....quite different than any place I've ever been. The hardest thing to get used to was the food. Being a vegetarian, most places had a lot of fish, but not a lot of vegetarian. Most dishes have a fish stock. There's a lot of noodles over there, so that's what I ended up having most. The travel was tough, too. We did a lot of that -- we do that here too, but its different over there, you travel all day. The people were very receptive, though.
そうですね。今まで行った所と全く違った印象ですね。食事が一番の問題でした。普段は野菜を好んで食べるのですが、日本では大抵魚料理を食べ、好きな野菜はそんなに食べませんでした。麺類も食べました。また移動が多くてきつかったですね。アメリカ国内でもツアーは多いのですが日本では毎日移動していたので少々勝手が違いました。それから日本の人々はとてももてなしてくれました。
Q. Before you joined the band, you were with another band, which included your brother, weren't you?
Venturesに加入する前は、あなたの兄弟と一緒にバンド活動をしていましたね?
A.Michael and I bounced around between a couple of different bands -- IXL, which was our project, and a band called Restless which was formed by some guys I knew about ten years ago. We played the club circuit doing a lot of original stuff, not really any top 40. We did a couple of demos, but then my brother moved to Australia, so that kinda put a damper on things.

Q. Who would you consider your major influences?
だれの影響を強く受けましたか?
A. My father, obviously. Jon Bonham was a big influence when I was growing up. Also Ginger Baker, Simon Phillips..... Terry Bozio is not necessary an influence, more like an idol....he's just amazing. My father is definitely at the top of the list.
勿論父親であるMelです。若いころはJon BonhamやGinger Baker、Simon Phillipsなどの影響も受けました。Terry Bozioは大変素晴らしいのですが影響を受けたと言うよりは私にとってアイドル的存在です。いずれにしてもMelが一番です。
Q. Do you have any favorite guitarist, other than the Ventures?.
Ventures のメンバー意外で好きなギタリストはいますか?
A. Well, Eric Clapton is one of my favorites, especially his blues. I listen to a lot of blues. I think Gerry McGee is very underrated. I also like the guitarist for Toto.
Eric Claptonのブルーススタイルが大好きです。ブルースをよく聞くのですが、Gerry McGeeはもっと評価されても良いと思います。それからTotoのギタリストも好きです。
Q.I notice that in concert you play Wipe Out and Caravan, two drum oriented songs, back to back. Is there any particular reason that you do that?
Leonさんはコンサートでは必ずドラムソロの入ったWipe OutとCaravanを締めくくりに演奏しますが、特別な理由があるのですか?
A. I think the guys have been doing that for some time when we do one set. I guess that its because Wipe Out is the last song of the set (as far as the audience knows) and it's a very exciting song. Then to come back and do Caravan really pumps the audience up even more.
エキサイティングなWipe Outは1部の最後の曲だとお客さんも知っていて、再び2部のステージに戻って最後にCaravanで盛り上がる、というスタイルをずっと演って来たからだと思います。
Q.What kind of music do you listen to?
普段どの様な音楽を聞いているのですか?
A.I listen to a lot of different kinds. Some jazz stuff, all of Terry Bozio's stuff, Los Lobotomies, Bryan Adams, Gerry Koto, Julie Dane. I leave myself open for all styles of music. I like musicals -- I went and saw Rent, which is a fabulous show, in L.A. It has a live band onstage, and its really exciting.

Q.How long have you been playing drums?
どのくらいの期間ドラムをたたいてますか?(いつからドラムをたたいてますか?)
A.Since I was ten years old. I got my first snare when I was ten, but I was beating on garbage can lids in the garage before that....just making noise, so my father bought me a drum.
10才の頃からです。10才の時に初めてスネアを買いましたが、それまでは車庫でゴミのドラム缶を叩いていました。ただの騒音だったのでMelがドラムを買ってくれたわけです。
Q. Your brother plays bass?
リーオンさんの兄弟はベースを弾いていませんか?
A.Yes, he started out playing guitar and then switched to bass.
はい。彼は最初ギターを弾いていましたが、ベースに転向しました。
Q. What do you work on to get better?
A. The best thing to work on is paradiddles..the rudiments. I work on things that are difficult for me.
Q.Do you have any hobbies?
リーオンさんの趣味はなんですか?
A. I like to draw, and do crafts, that sort of thing.
